A Democratic Congress...

Tom Smith at the Right Coast points out that Hillary Clinton is probably praying the Democrats don't take Congress this year to help her '08 prospects.

Of course, I don't hope that happens. However, if it did, I think Americans would naturally be looking for a Republican President who could work with a Democratic Congress to constructively solve problems. I know one person who is qualified...

Single Issue Voters Seem to Like Romney...

I, like Evangelicals, haven't heard of the term "movement conservative" before but it seems to be a way of describing Republicans who are interested in various single issue voting subjects.

Of course, the most important of these issues for Romney is the defense of marriage. Marriage is a winning issue. Even voters who otherwise think the Republicans are making a mess of things are largely in line with traditional marriage values; as this AP/AOL poll demonstrates.

Of course, there is sometimes a disconnect between the party that is more in line with the opinions of the voters on these single issues and who those voters cast their ballot for. Not everyone is a single issue voter. So, many pro-Israel folks have voted Democrat while realizing that the Republicans are much more pro-Israel than the Democrats. Many African-Americans who support defending traditional marriage have voted Democrat in the past, nonetheless.

Fortunately for us, we have in Mitt Romney a candidate who not only embodies the values we hold on many important issues, but who is also an intelligent and natural leader who Americans can place the greatest confidence in to represent us.

The Ominous Mormon Vote...

Jeff at Iowans for Romney effectively analyzes the recent Boston Globe Scandal (my description, not his).

As for me, I can't see why anyone would care.

-So, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has about 6 million members in the United States (These are all rough guesses for discussion purposes).
-Of those members, probably only 3-4 million are actually active in the church. Some might say that is generous.
-Of those 3-4 million, we can estimate half are children.
-That leaves us with 1.5-2 million potential voters.
-Probably approaching half of those live in Utah. Perhaps 750,000 Voters. The other 750,000 to 1 million live here and there, with significant number in states like mine, California.

Does anyone doubt that Utah is going to vote for Romney and that they in turn will vote for a Republican President (Governor Huntsman aside)?

Does anyone really think that people like me in California really matter?

Do they really think the Mormon vote is so Ominous in a country of 125 Million Voters?

Judges, Liberty, and the Social Contract...

Some writers may lead you to believe that Mitt's statements about Judges in a political speech should be exactly the same as when he is speaking at the swearing in of a judicial appointment.
Common sense would seem to suggest otherwise.

Was Mitt inconsistent? No.

The article relates that Mitt looks to appoint Judges who respect individual liberty. This is wholly consistent with the view that overturning law and tradition to support gay marriage is contemptible.

On the Rights of Children...

As the article quoted, "What (the judges) ignored is that marriage is not primarily about adults; marriage is about the nurturing and development of children. ... Every child deserves a mother and a father."

The individual liberty of children is wholly overlooked in the article. From abortion to same sex marriage, what is focused on too often is what degree of licentiousness a person will have, regardless of the consequences decisions have on children.

Liberty is not merely about being given everything you want. Nor merely about doing whatever you want. Liberty must be defined in relation to some rational right. Unfortunately, for gay marriage proponents, there is simply no reason to undercut the incentives society has put in place for traditional marriage and child rearing. Children have a right to have a father and a mother and that right obligates us as a society to seek to encourage and uphold the traditional union.

On Social Contract...

Individual Liberty is also related to governance in a fundamental way. We form ourselves and permit ourselves to be ruled based upon certain rules about how that power will be exercised over us by the governing body. Typically, how that is articulated is through a constitution and a legislative process. When judges seek to create new law, especially when they do it claiming it emanates from a constitution, they are subjugating this basic individual right.

In fact, they are usurping the Social Contract.

For the Single Issue Voters...

In light of the interesting statements about gay marriage by McCain on Hardball with Chris Matthews, I thought it would be interesting to read some reporting about the possible Republican Presidential Candidates from those most in support of gay marriage.

365 gay on McCain.

365 gay on Giuliani.

UK gay on Romney (yes, they talk about him over there too).

I am pretty sure Romney won't be getting any endorsements from any of these folks. Romney has said, "[M]arriage is not primarily about adults; marriage is about the nurturing and development of children. . . . Every child deserves a mother and a father". No equivocation there. Just American values.

Forgive me if your favorite candidate from whatever state is not on the list. In California, we only hear about these three.

The Mormon Kennedy...

Another "religion" article. The question is whether Romney is the Mormon Kennedy, it seems to me. All indications from the MA experience tell me he is. The analysis seems correct. There are many more common issues between Evangelicals and Mormons than differences when it comes to politics. However, what is lost in the commentary is the broader appeal of Mitt to everyone who wants solid and level headed leadership for our Country. If Mitt can succeed in MA, he can succeed for America.

Good Mitt Blogs...

Mitt Romney for President in 2008 is the source for articles about Mitt.

Iowans for Romney is also good on the commentary side.

On the religion discussion... Evangelicals for Romney.

About Timotheus...

I just wanted to add my voice to the growing number of Americans who want fresh leadership for our nation in 2008 and know that Governor Mitt Romney is clearly the person for the job. He will bring an immense capability honed through business, volunteer, and government experience to the job. He also brings a great amount of class, style, as well as down to earth common sense.

I am a family man who believes Mitt stands for the traditional values that I cherish and want to uphold in our great country. I believe the sacred purpose of marriage is to bring children into the world and to provide couples with the incentives from a societal standpoint that will strengthen the ties between husband and wife and solidify families. I support Mitt because he has led the fight to preserve the institution of marriage from those who want to reduce it to merely a commited relationship between any two people and thus undercut the benefits reserved for families.

I am a relgious man who believes that life should be respected and not destroyed without good reason. Because of this, I support Mitt Romney for his veto of measures in MA designed to expand stem cell research and "emergency" contraceptives and look to him as the candidate who will do the most to prevent the tax dollars of Americans from being used for these things.

I received my undergraduate degree in Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations. I believe that we have a solemn obligation to fulfill in Iraq to do whatever we can to help them strengthen and secure their country from further deteriorating. I believe we should continue to have a strong military that can act flexibly as a deterrent to those who want to acquire nuclear weapons and use them to oppress others.

I attended law school and as such, I look at the rule of law as very important to our society. I also believe that judges should not use the law as their tool to impose their own values upon society. For these reasons, I admire and respect Mitt Romney for taking a stance against the Supreme Council of MA by doing all he could within the legal process to oppose the imposition of gay marriage upon MA by judicial fiat.

I am a criminal prosecutor. As such, I believe people have a fundamental right not to become crime victims, whether that be through gangs of illegal aliens or anti-Americans who commit political violence. I believe Mitt Romney takes our nation's security, including securing our border, seriously and that he is the best choice for law enforcement.

I am a fiscal conservative and believe that Mitt is the person to balance our federal budget and to do something about our untenable federal dificit. I was impressed that Mitt balanced the budget in MA, and I know that with his experience in the business world, he has the acumen to understand the issues that will need to be addressed in order to save our country from the monetary and economic disaster the democrats are putting us on.
