In this article on National Review Online, the author points out the problems MA's univeral health program are facing.
"Gov. Romney had a vision of creating a competitive marketplace for affordable health insurance and reallocating subsidies to provide health insurance for uninsured citizens who use hospital emergency rooms for medical care at taxpayer expense; but the compromises demanded by the heavily Democratic state legislature are jeopardizing its success."
I continue to be amazed that the plan ended up as good as it is, considering what Mitt was working with in MA. Either way, health care coverage will be a major issue in 2008. The democrats will be promising away the rest of any future we have. We need a candidate like Mitt who will be able to come up with solutions that won't bankrupt our country. In fact, because of Mitt's experience in MA, I believe he is the best candidate to tell the democrats why they will ruin the insurance system if they aren't careful and what they should do to effect change in a rational way.

Speaker Hastert...
According to My Man Mitt, Dennis Hastert is endorsing Mitt Romney for President.
"Our nation needs proven executive leadership. Whether in business or public service, Governor Romney has demonstrated a unique ability to inspire people to go further and reach new levels of accomplishment. He sees the challenges before us and is not afraid to confront them. Governor Romney is the right kind of leader for America." -Dennis Hastert.
This is also being reported in Roll Call.

Looming Iran...
Romney has once again impressed me with his speech today in Israel on Iran. He laid out a five prong approach to preventing a nuclear Iran that included selective disinvestment and diplomatic isolation of Ahmadinejad similar to Romney's treatment of Khatami when he came to visit MA.
It is clear from Romney's speech that he will support Israel as President and that he has the wherewithal to find the means of pressuring Iran to abandon the quest for nuclear arms.

DNC Takes Notice...
I am proud to announce an official defaming of our candidate by the Democratic National Committee. It was pretty funny when John McCain claimed Romney wasn't conservative. It is hilarious when the DNC does it.
Of course, this should make even more obvious what really doesn't even need to be stated. It is not true conservatives who are unhappy about Mitt's position on issues such as protecting marriage, life, and family; it is the people who deride the Republican values Mitt stands for.
As an ardent conservative, I continue to support Mitt Romney.

Vice President Giuliani...
Sorry for the forward thinking when we haven't even won the nomination yet, but I wanted to opine on one potential running mate. I also don't want to sound disrespectful of his chances of capturing the nomination. I think he has a very legitimate shot at it. What I want to suggest is that a Romney-Giuliani ticket would be a very powerful ticket to run.
Giuliani is the perfect ticket balancer for Mitt. He is much less conservative than Mitt. For people who want to see a balance in the White House, Giuliani provides it. Giuliani is also a very popular and well known person. To the extent that Vice President is a figurehead position, Giuliani is ideal. Hey, he's a national hero.
But I also think Giuliani is good because he is strong on the war on terror and on criminal justice issues. I think he would be a good asset to Romney as they try and solve problems on a national level that really require city and state action. Their respective experience would give me a lot of confidence that all was being done to protect our country.
What does this mean for us? I would suggest that we should think about this as the campaign unfolds. Giuliani is who he is. He's not particularly conservative on social issues, but he's not pretending to be. You get what you get with Giuliani; an all around good guy with lots of executive experience who I am proud to have as a part of the party, even if I am much more conservative than he is. For that reason, you won't hear me talk much more about him, I would suspect. But when I do, I guess I am just pointing out that I wouldn't mind having him in the White House (with Mitt, of course).

1994 versus 2007 (Or should I saw 1979?)...
A lot has changed since 1994. Back then, we were campaigning to try to break the democratic hold on Washington. Mitt Romney was running against one of the Senate's most liberal members, Ted Kennedy. He was running despite having no experience in public office. He lost, although he posted much better numbers than expected.
Fast forward to 2007. The democrats have taken over Congress and they are aiming for the white house. In fact, in 2010, we could be in a similar situation to 1994 if we aren't determined. Mitt Romney is running again. Now, he has a term as Governor of MA behind him, as well as other notable experience (SLC Olympics). He has a record.
Back in 1994, Mitt Romney was a "dark horse" candidate. Now, he is a well known one. Back in 1994, Romney was the kind of candidate that liberals and conservatives fret about in Supreme Court nomnination hearings. If you are a conservative candidate, they cross-examine you about that Federalist Society event you graciously agree to be a panelist for. If this isn't bad enough, it turns out Justice Robert Bork was also there. Really, they want to say, you are more conservative than you are letting on.
Some conservatives (and undoubtedly some liberal republicans who want to marginalize Romney) are doing an analysis of Romney that is similar to what liberals have done to Republican Supreme Court nominations in past years. They are trying to paint him to be more liberal though. After all, a Republican's worst nightmare is to have a Sandra Day O'Connor, an Anthony Kennedy or other candidate who votes the wrong way in the next Casey decision. It is no different in politics. We want to know we have a conservative candidate.
Usually, Supreme Court justices have a substantial record behind them when nominated to the Supreme Court. Despite how anyone tries to paint their leanings, the record generally speaks for itself. Romney is no different.
In fact, Romney arguably has a more conservative record than another great man, President Reagan. After a tenure as a democrat, Reagan was Governor of California. As Governor, he raised taxes and fought to presreve the environment. When he ran for President in 1979, I suppose that everyone could have fixated on the fact that he had once been a democrat and was raised taxes in California. Instead, they looked at his message about the state of our country. Because there was no YouTube, he didn't have to constantly defend himself against comments he made before changing his mind about being a new deal democrat.
Romney's comparison of himself to Reagan is very adept. Not only was Reagan a great President, he believed in the issues he had changed his mind about. In some respect, he had converted to the Republican cause; although he says that it was the democrats that had changed. Romney is also a convert in many ways. He can articulate his convictions and reasons for supporting life and traditional marriage in a way that only someone who has truly wrestled and come to the truth can.
Romney has four years of record from arguably the most liberal state in the Union. What should we expect to see from that record? We should expect to see any candidate, no matter how conservative, making compromises. In Romney, we don't have many.
Romney stood up for social issues in MA. He stood up against emergency contraception. He stood up against funding stem cell research (when Bush approved funding on a federal level for this research I was disappointed. Is Mitt more conservative than Bush?). He fought for traditional marriage by every conceivable legal means and now a vote by the People may finally be held. He did this while all the time dealing with a very liberal legislature.
To stand against the tide of emergency contraceptives, stem cell research, and gay marriage in a state like MA is nothing short of remarkable and from this record we can safely conclude that Mitt Romney is a true social conservative.
Being a very conservative person on social issues, I am proud to support him for President.

American Thinker Article...
There is a great read at the American Thinker about why Romney is the man to be President:
"America will face some serious and complex problems in the next administration: social security, Medicare, health care, sustainable energy, the continuing war on terrorists, advancing and supporting democracy in the Middle East, and a host of other foreseen and unforeseen issues. We need a leader who has a proven record of tackling big problems and solving them. That man is former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney."
One could call these problems, "a new generation of challenges."
Thank you to Mitt Romney for President 2008' for the link.

David Frum on Romney...
Some quotes from the article at the American Enterprise Institute:
"The Republican presidential field for 2008 is led by one of the nation's greatest military heroes, a seasoned senator, one of the most famous and best-liked men in America. Running hard alongside him is the most successful mayor in American history, the man who saved New York City from crime and defended it from terrorism. And the third front-tier candidate is . . . a one term governor of Massachusetts."
"How did this happen? How can it be that Governor Mitt Romney has come to be seen as one of the top three contenders for a presidential nomination? Romney has benefited from the secret issue in the 2008 presidential race: competence. Since Hurricane Katrina, Americans have lost faith in George W. Bush's ability to manage the government. In every poll conducted after the summer of 2005, about 60% of Americans describe Bush as "ineffective." Suddenly, everybody wants a president who can make government work."
Thanks to Evangelicals for the heads up.

South Carolina Senator Endorses Romney...
Senator DeMint of South Carolina, is endorsing Romney for President.
"I have not seen people respond to a candidate with the enthusiasm — with the real energy — that I saw them respond to Romney," DeMint said in a telephone interview. "It was pretty much Reagan-like."

Fundraiser, Um, Revised...
Well, I just reported that Mitt and co. had raised over $2.5 million in his initial fundraising push. I guess I was wrong. Yahoo! News is now reporting that figure should be $6.5 million. As the AP writer put it:
"White House hopeful Mitt Romney and 400 of his backers raised more than $6.5 million on Monday in a glitzy fundraising blitz that will force all Republican rivals to take notice."
"They've come together and blown us away today, and humbled us at the same time," said the former Massachusetts governor as he clutched the hand of his wife, Ann.
The New York Times has a good read on the event.

Romney's Poll Position...
Yahoo! News has a story reporting that Romney trails all democrats. I wanted to say something about the current Rasmussen Reports numbers on Republican approval ratings. If you look at them, you will notice that a very high percentage of those polled gave an opinion, either favorable, or unfavorable, about the following people:
92% McCain
94% Giuliani
91% Gingrich
Only 64% of people surveryed offered an opinion about Romney. What does this mean? Basically, 36% of people felt like they didn't have enough information to give an opinion either way about Romney, whereas, most everyone felt like they had an opinion about McCain, Giuliani, and Gingrich. This is to be expected at this early stage of the game when most voters haven't been introduced to Romney. What it means is that we can still convince 36% of the electorate that they should have a favorable opinion about Romney and that they should also vote for him. So, when you see a funny headline like the one on Yahoo! News, know that we have work to do, but it is to educate, and not necessarily to change someone's mind.

Mitt Romney: The Leader We Need
As we approach the next several early contests, I want to re-explain just a few of the foundational reasons why Mitt Romney deserves to be the Republican nominee for President.
America is Facing Challenges Entirely New to our Generation. Mitt Romney is the Leader we need to Face these Challenges Successfully.
The next President will inherit a federal government staggering under the deficit and bloated with new entitlement programs. We can only expect that to increase with the Democrats now in Congress. Will we have a President who has proven ability to balance the budget? We know Mitt's track record.
The next President will need to act to protect local communities from the crime and other social harms created by illegal immigration. Will we have President who believes local law enforcement should have the tools to do their job ? We know Mitt supports protecting our communities.
The next President will need to deal with the continuing erosion of the traditional family or see the very foundations of our society undermined. Will we have a President who believes in marriage and wants to support it? We know we have a champion in Mitt.
The next President of the United States will take over a much different place than Bush inherited from Clinton. The next President will be our first post 9-11 President really. He will be the first one to shape our continuing response to the threats in the world from Kharijites (my term, not his). Will we have someone who believes in doing all we can to protect Americans from terrorists? We know where we stand with Mitt.
The next President will need to lead America to be more competitive in order that our businesses can compete within the world and maintain our quality of life. Will we have a President with extraordinary business acumen who has great insight the issues our country faces and will be able to construct innovative solutions? We know Mitt's abilities.
These are just a few of what I believe are the new generation of challenges we face. I am glad we have a candidate we can trust on these issues. I hope we will have a President who will do the same. If you want these same values in a President, vote for Mitt Romney America!

Gay Marriage...
Evangelicals has effectively discussed a very weird argument circulating that Mitt Romney "chose" gay marriage in MA. Read their post here. Obviously, Mitt is a champion of traditional marriage and the values of America and such comments are intentionally calculated to mislead people. What should we do with people who intentionally mislead? We should reject everything they are saying and look at Mitt for the respectable person that he is.
Thank you for your efforts, Mitt, to protect the institution of marriage.
